Long Lost Family star Davina McCall opens up about being abandoned by her mom

Long Lost Family presenter Davina McCall has often discussed her turbulent beginnings in life, including her earliest memory.

In a 2011 interview, the presenter revealed that her first memory was living with her grandmother when she was four years old. She told The Guardian: “My mother told me she was going on holiday, but I didn’t see her for three months.”

“I feel terrible, my mom hasn’t come to pick me up yet.”

Davina expanded on this in a 2020 Instagram Live video, explaining: “My mom left me at my grandma’s and said she was going on a two-week ski trip and she didn’t know how to tell me no I wasn’t coming back . But that’s how she presented it to me and hoped I would forget. I was four years old.

She added: “I remember being in the kitchen and looking at my grandma. I thought: I feel terrible, my mother hasn’t come to pick me up yet.

She said she felt guilty because her grandmother had to take care of her, continuing: “She still takes care of me, she must be thinking, ‘Oh, it hurts me so much to have my granddaughter here.’ I still have to take care of her.

“She actually loved that I was there, but that’s how I imagined it.”

Tonight (June 11) she will continue to look at other people’s upbringing on Long Lost Family: Born Without Trace, which she hosts alongside Nicky Campbell. The ITV show returned for a sixth season this week.

Davina was allegedly left at the airport at the age of three

Davina was born in 1967, the daughter of Andrew McCall and Florence Hennion. They separated when she was only three years old.

Florence will return to her native France, leaving young Davina in the care of her grandparents. At the age of three, Davina had to come to the countryside as an unaccompanied minor.

She told the Sunday Times that her mother often forgot to pick her up from the airport – and once wet herself because she was so scared.

Appearance on the BBC program Who Do You Think You Are? in 2009, Davina said, “When you’re the child of a divorced parent, you’re kind of split in two. I didn’t just split in two, I had two countries. In some ways I have lost touch with much of my French family and in a strange way I feel like I am half a person.
