£35m Liverpool player mocked by national media after latest performance for country

A key Liverpool player has been mocked by the media following his latest international performance.

Liverpool have a total of nine players heading to Euro 2024 this summer, and many of them are expected to play key roles in the tournament.

Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai will captain Scotland, the Netherlands and Hungary respectively.

The Reds have a particularly strong Dutch contingent, with Van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch all set to travel to the tournament in Germany.

Ronald Koeman’s men played their last preparation match before the Euro last night and won 4-0 against Iceland.

Van Dijk got on the scoresheet and Gakpo scored on 75 minutes while Gravenberch was an unused substitute.

Despite an impressive performance from the Liverpool skipper, Gakpo received criticism from the Dutch media.

Gakpo was replaced by Donyell Malen in the 75th minute and Voetbel Primeur was far from impressed with the Liverpool star’s performance.

The outlet gave him a five out of 10 and said his best moment of the match was handing the mascot his jacket.

They wrote: “Gakpo could not demonstrate that Koeman had no way around him. Keeping a player’s mascot warm during the Wilhelmus by giving him his training jacket was his best action of the evening.

Football Oranje was slightly less harsh on Gakpo, rating him six out of 10 after his performance against Iceland.

But the outlet noted the £35million man had a “quiet” game in the final third.

Gakpo’s stats against Iceland

While the media has been particularly critical of Gakpo’s demonstration, the statistics tell a slightly different story.

Sofascore gave the striker a rating of 7.8, making him the third best Dutch player of the evening. Only Van Dijk and Joey Veerman received higher marks.
