Last Thursday, influencer Kate Szepanowski said goodbye to her boyfriend Jordan Roman Brennan after he was sentenced to 11 years in prison for trying to aid in a “greedy” cocaine smuggling plot.

The 29-year-old mother of two appeared in the Supreme Court in Brisbane, where Brennan was sentenced to just over ten years in prison with no possibility of parole for five and a half years after he and his friend Brendan John Sipple was found guilty of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of illegally imported drugs.

On May 31, the jury returned guilty verdicts against both men after deliberating for more than six hours following a short trial.

Two friends were hired to find 48kg of high purity cocaine hidden in a shipping container.

Brennan and Sipple, 30, entered the freight yard at the Port of Brisbane on June 12, 2020 at 4.10am after spotting a particular shipping container on their previous rounds.

Judge Michael Copley said one or both men opened the container’s refrigeration panels expecting to find a significant amount of cocaine.

“Your participation in this crime was a result of your submission to the temptation of greed,” Judge Copley said in announcing the sentence.

The cocaine had been removed by police four months earlier after dock workers in Belgium found 42 rectangular packages hidden in a container.

Police tracked the men using listening devices and GPS as they repeatedly drove a van from their Gold Coast homes to the Port of Brisbane in June 2020.

The jury heard audio from the van as the men discussed a large payment and plans to bury the cocaine in isolated bushland.

The mum-of-two stood in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to watch as her fiancé was sentenced to just over ten years in prison with no possibility of parole of five and a half years

The footage also captured the men celebrating the discovery of the container while listening to the songs “Circles” by Post Malone and “Survivor” by Destiny’s Child.

Crown prosecutor Patrick Wilson said the men were determined to act as a key element in the illicit drugs supply chain and had shown no remorse.

“It is clear that they were doing something for which they received a significant financial reward in return for their involvement… they knew full well that the drugs would be commercially exploited by others,” Wilson said.

Defense attorney Josh Underwood said Sipple overcame a difficult childhood to start a business supplying subcontractors to the construction industry.

“He is honest and hard-working … and this offense was not his style,” Underwood said.

Defense attorney Mitchell Rawlings said Brennan was extremely motivated to rehabilitate herself and started a courier business.

“He had sporadic but significant contact with authorities early in his life, but that has now stabilized,” Rawlings said.

Judge Copley said he must impose a sentence that deters defendants and others from trying to obtain “easy money” for serious drug offenses.

“Neither of you had any qualms about the impact this cocaine would have on an individual or a community,” Judge Copley said.

Sipple was sentenced to 12 years in prison with a six-and-a-half-year parole ban.

Brennan was sentenced to 11 years in prison with a five-and-a-half-year parole ban due to having spent two years in custody.

Szepanowski is the sister of fellow influencer Chloe Szepanowski, who in turn is a member of the Orval family through her relationship with YouTuber Mitch Orval.

Although the Gold Coast beauty makes her living as an influencer, she has taken an extended break from social media while her boyfriend Brennan faces drug charges.

Just a few weeks ago, she was spotted appearing in court to support him as he applied lip gloss after completely changing her look from blonde to brunette.
