Tipping has become a huge part of everyday transactions, from coffee to takeaway coffee, but generous tipping has declined since the pandemic. A new study from Bankrate shows that 59% of Americans have a negative opinion about tipping. Only 45% of Gen Z consumers have a negative opinion about tipping. Delaware, although one of the smallest US states, has the highest average tip percentage at 22.1%. California, the most populous state in the US, has the lowest average tip at 17.9%, but requires higher hourly wages. Tipping at sit-down restaurants has remained roughly the same at 19.1% over the past year, while tips at quick-service restaurants have averaged 16%. New Jersey has the lowest tipping rates at fast food restaurants at 13.8%.
