A Man City fan’s ‘disgusting’ moment on match day told him something had to change now

A McDonald’s manager who had an embarrassing moment while attending a Manchester City match has revealed how he managed to lose three stone.

Tom Withington weighed almost 24 stone when he was “panting heavily” and “dripping with sweat” during the short walk to the Etihad Stadium.

The 23-year-old was so embarrassed by the situation that he refused to go to the pub before the match, later deciding to go on a weight loss expedition.

Tom joined the Slimming World club in Haughton Green, Tameside, and the weight quickly began to fall off.

When he joined the team in March weighing 23,11.5 pounds, the shift manager at McDonald’s has lost 3,11.5 pounds so far.

Now he hopes to fulfill his biggest dream and become an Emirates cabin crew member – something his weight had previously held him back from doing.

Tom, who has worked at McDonald’s for almost seven years, said: “My weight made me feel embarrassed, tired, exhausted, fed up and constantly in a ‘CBA’ mood.”

“On the way to City for a short walk with the fans, I was panting and dripping with sweat. Because of this, I refused to go to the pub before the match because I was ashamed of my appearance. It made me feel absolutely disgusting about myself.

“Now I can take off my thick sweater at a football game and small steps like this make me proud of the success of my weight loss journey so far.

“My dream is to become an Emirates cabin crew member and now it’s my time. After years of lacking self-confidence, I am ready to pursue my dream career.

Tom says working at McDonald’s was a challenge during his weight loss journey.

“As a shift manager at McDonalds Shift work can be a real challenge,” he added.

“My job requires long shifts most of the day. In the past, when it came to fast food, the temptation was quite overwhelming.

“This time I’m making better choices and even surprising myself by taking the food I prepared with me to work.”

The manager recently managed to wear a reflective jacket at work for the first time in four years, which further motivated him to continue his weight loss efforts.

“I was shocked that I had made such a big change in my body in such a short time,” he added.

“I thought that’s it, this time we won’t go off the bandwagon. I’m too motivated. I see little changes in my daily life, like getting to the last hole on my belt and not sweating as much. 2025 is my year of cabin crew.

“Looking back, losing three stone in 13 weeks is a huge achievement for me.

“It encouraged me to do things I hadn’t done before, go places and feel more comfortable in public places.

“All this has an impact on so much more. I feel better physically, I have more self-confidence, and my anxiety level is definitely improving.

Andrea Crisp, consultant at Tom’s Slimming World in Haughton Green, said: “Tom has been a member of my group before.

“I was excited when I saw Tom coming home that evening. This time Tom seemed different. There was determination in his voice and the entire aura around him, it was different.

“As I sat and looked at the set, I saw Tom having great moments. Tom has made many friends in both groups, and no matter which group he attends, the other group misses his presence and asks about him.”
