OPELIKA, Ala. (WRBL) – The SBI is investigating the fatal shooting of an officer Tuesday afternoon along Interstate 85 after a crash.

According to Opelika Police, on June 11, 2024, at approximately 2:35 p.m., a crash involving an 18-wheeler and a passenger car began on Interstate 85. The Opelika Police Department received an emergency call regarding the accident and, they were told, required an immediate response from officers.

After arriving at the scene, officers said they found a man allegedly armed with a knife. The situation quickly escalated, culminating in an officer-involved shooting. The subject was pronounced dead at the scene.

As per protocol, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) was called in to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be forwarded to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office will present the case to the Lee County Grand Jury for consideration.
