A ‘dangerous’ Westcliff rapist who took indecent photos of children is jailed

The rapist was sentenced to more than four years in prison for multiple sexual offenses and creating indecent images of children.

Investigation into Alex Symeonides of Westcliff Park Drive, Westcliff, The operation was launched in October after a specialist team from Essex Police received information that a 20-year-old man was using an internet connection to view indecent images of children.

He was arrested and during interrogation he admitted to having accessed indecent images of children.

As the investigation progressed, officers found a number of indecent images on his devices. They also discovered evidence of a criminal sexual assault.

Following this work, Simeonides was charged with two counts of rape, one count of sexual assault, and three counts of making indecent images of a child, and pleaded guilty to all of these charges in court.

Simeonides appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, June 10, where he was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison.

Detective Constable Matthew Wright, who led the investigation, said: “Simeonides is a dangerous criminal and Essex is a safer place while he is behind bars.

“We want to protect people from harm and we will leave no stone unturned in our work to secure charges against predatory criminals.

“Our detailed forensic work throughout the investigation uncovered an additional crime, and with the evidence before him, Simeonides had no choice but to plead guilty.

“Essex is not a place for sex offenders and child abusers to hide.

“I hope this verdict will help those affected by Simeonides’ crimes on their path to recovery.”

In addition to his prison sentence, Simeonides was given a sexual harm prevention order and placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Last year, Essex Police’s online investigation team made more than 600 arrests or interviews of suspects in connection with these crimes and laid 424 charges – the most of any force in the UK.

Last year, the team also solved 92 percent of the 450 investigations it conducted.

Essex Police has the third highest rate of convictions for sexual offenses that go to court, and last year the force secured over 2,500 children from sexual offenses.
