Kevin McCarthy harshly mocks Georgetown University lecture event

Kevin McCarthy’s tenure as Speaker of the House will forever be famous for how he supported former President Donald Trump’s lies about the 2020 election that led to the 2021 insurrection and helped the Republican Party to oppose a peaceful transfer of power to President Joe Biden.

Surprisingly, this tarnished resume didn’t stop Georgetown University from inviting McCarthy to participate in an event at the private Washington, DC institution.

On April 9, McCarthy will participate in a conversation titled “How Strong is Our Democracy?”

The event is described as follows on the George University website:

With a majority of Americans concerned about the functioning of democracy and a growing erosion of trust in democratic institutions, how strong is our democracy? Join us for a conversation with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy about how Congress works (and doesn’t work) and whether our institutions can bring a divided House together.

HuffPost reached out to the university for comment, but no one immediately responded.

However, many people on

The reaction was largely one of disbelief that Georgetown officials thought McCarthy was the right person to talk about democracy.

Others offered sarcastic suggestions for future guest speakers the university might consider.
