In Zamboanga, Soccsksargen, smuggled cigarettes worth P973,000 were confiscated

AUTHORITIES have arrested two people and seized smuggled cigarettes worth approximately P973,000 as part of a separate anti-smuggling campaign in the Zamboanga Peninsula and Soccsksargen, police said on Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

Of the total amount of smuggled cigarettes, P573,000 was confiscated in Zamboanga Peninsula and the remaining P400,000 in Soccsksargen.

Bowenn Police Brigadier General Joey Masauding of the Zamboanga Peninsula Police Regional Office (PRO) said that at about 9:10 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 10 main cases of contraband cigarettes worth P573,000 were seized on Monday, June 10 at Block 4 in Baluno Village in Isabela. City, Basilan.

Masauding said no one was arrested as the alleged owner was not around when a joint team of policemen and Customs arrived at Block 4 in Baluno village.

He said the confiscated contraband was safely transported to the Isabela City Police Station for proper disposal.

Police Brigadier General Percival Augustus Placer, director of police in Soccsksargen, said that on Friday, June 7, police officers in Sitio Taliac in the village of Kamanga in Maasim, Sarangani province, arrested two people.

Placer identified the two arrested suspects as Mike and Jay, all residents of Sision village, Maitum, Sarangani.

Placer said the two tried to escape when they sensed the presence of police officers, but were later cornered by police officers.

He said 2,000 reams of smuggled cigarettes worth £400,000 were seized from the two suspects.

He said the recovered evidence and arrested suspects were taken to Maasim City Police Station for appropriate processing.

“In coordination with our law enforcement partners, we will be relentless in our efforts to combat all forms of illicit activity to put an end to nefarious smuggling schemes,” he said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
