Thripunithura blast: HC seeks to assess damage caused to houses

The Kerala High Court has directed the executive engineer of the public works department (PWD), Ernakulam, to assess the damage caused to the houses of 15 residents in the February explosion at a temporary firecracker storage facility at Choorakkad near Thripunithura.

The court also directed the Executive Engineer to complete the assessment within two months. The order was recently issued on the basis of a written application filed by Gopinathan C. of Choorakad and 14 other residents, who requested the state government to issue a directive empowering the official to assess the damage caused to the houses of the petitioners. The petitioners also sought compensation of ₹ 1 lakh from the government for the mental agony and insecurity they suffered.

When the petition came up for hearing, Asif Ali MH, counsel for the petitioners, stated that despite the petitioners’ repeated requests for immediate payment of compensation, the competent authorities had paid no heed to them.
