The functioning of District Licensing Committees, which supervise non-transplantation of organs in the country, will be strengthened and streamlined to ensure that altruistic organ transplantation is carried out flawlessly.

Kerala State Organ and Tissue Transplantation Organization (K-SOTTO) organized a one-day workshop here on Tuesday to lay down guidelines for uniform functioning of district level licensing committees and that commercial considerations be eliminated in case of unrelated or altruistic organ donation in the state

The workshop was inaugurated by Joint Director, Medical Education, KV.Viswanathan. The inaugural session was chaired by K-SOTTO Executive Director, Noble Gracious.

The aim of the workshop was to discuss the role of district licensing committees in sanctioning unrelated organ donations to dispel rumors about organ donation and reduce commercial transactions between organ donors and recipients.

Members of various district authorization committees participated. The workshop also discussed the legal aspects of unrelated organ donation, as well as the psychological and social aspects of organ donation

K-SOTTO has already started activities aimed at digitizing the procedures of district authorization committees, and a digital version model was presented at the workshop.

The meetings were chaired by, among others, A. K. Unmesh, head of the forensic department; Veena Roshan Jose and Shivender Rahul, Assistant Professor, Nagpur National Law University, among others.
