Jessica Pegula, Anna Kalinskaya and Serena Williams’ former coach mourn the painful death of close confidant Donna Vekic

It is often said that a dog is man’s best friend. Ask Donna Vekić, who has many dogs as pets. The Croatian tennis star is quite active on social media and often shares great memories of time spent with his pets. However, this time things took a turn for the worse when she took to her official Instagram page to mourn the sad loss of one of her favorite dogs. A few hours ago, Vekic shared her personal tragedy with the tennis world on her official Instagram. She posted a series of photos with her dog Hick and wrote: “thank you for the best 18 years”, along with a sad face with tears in his eyes and a heart emoji. While mourning the loss of her pet, Vekic was devastated and other tennis stars paid tribute to him.

The Russian tennis star Anna Kalińska was one of the first to contact her. She commented on Vekic’s post with multiple crying emojis as she shared similar emotions to Vekic. Moreover, Jessica Pegula also paid tribute with tears and heart emojis, which means she was right behind Vekic during these difficult times.

Other tennis stars who have reached out to Vekic include Belinda Bencic and Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs. While Bencic commented with three broken heart emojis, Stubbs wrote: “Oh noooo.” when the emotions subsided.

Meanwhile, in an Instagram post shared by Vekic, the Croatian star posted a series of photos from their shared moments. In each photo, Vekic looked very happy and smiled, signifying what her dog’s presence meant to her. However, after this tragedy, Vekic is left with a huge void that cannot be filled. Additionally, Hick was also a close confidant of Vekic during difficult times.

The Covid-19 pandemic has been a testing time for everyone, including Vekic, who endured terrible experiences during isolation. However, she had the company of Hick, her dog, with whom she spent time. Then, when tournaments resumed in empty stadiums, Vekic didn’t have the best of times there.

Recalling her experiences, she once said: “It was like a nightmare. That was awful. I heard my trainer breathing, so I thought, “Please, I need people.” Nevertheless, Vekic continued to compete in tournaments and performed decently. Her pet, Hick, had a large role to play in maintaining Vekic’s emotional balance.

In the midst of this personal tragedy, Vekic is currently playing in the Libema Open. She won her first round match against German Tamara Korpatsch in straight sets and will next face Greet Minnen. In what could be the perfect tribute to her late pet, Vekic will want to dig deep and lift the trophy here.
